Reminiscing the journey to Matri Mandir

Rome was not built in a day.  It took years of planning and tireless efforts of innumerable known and unknown faces to transform a vision into reality. Matri Mandir has a similar story to tell. The establishment in its current magnificent form was a dream painstakingly put together by its many members, devotees and visitors.

Matri Mandir Samity was established in 1965 with Late A.K. Sarkar as President and Late S.R. Banerjee as General Secretary. In 1966, it was registered under Societies Act and Late Sachindra Kumar Maitra became its President and Late Bimal Bhusan Chakraborty, General Secretary. [Past President and General Secretaries]

Enumerated below are some key milestones we reminiscence around:
The first construction, a small Kali temple, was taken up in 1969. The foundation stone was laid by Late S. G. Basu Mallik, the then Vice-chairman of Delhi Development Authority. The temple was inaugurated during the auspicious occasion of Kali Puja in 1969. A small clay deity of Maa Kali was installed and daily Puja started

Prof. Debiprasad Chattopaddhyaya, the then Hon’ble Minister of Commerce, laid the foundation stone on September 22, 1974,  in the benign presence of Late (Justice) Nagendra Singh, Late (Dr) Santosh Kr. Sen and Late (Smt) Kalyani Kumaramangalam among many others

The ground-floor of the Dharmashala was inaugurated by Prof. Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya on 15th April 1975 and thrown open to visitors from 1st August 1975

Toward the end of 1978, the majestic Maa Kali Temple was ready. It was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Vice-President of India, Dr. B.D. Jatti on the 4th December, 1978, in the holy presence of Shri Shri Anandamoyee Maa and Swami Budhanandajee of Ramakrishna Mission.

The expansion of Dharmashala was taken up in 1986. By means of the generous support received from Sri Sri Mohananda Brahmachari Maharaj, the three-story Dharmashala block, in its present form, was completed, signaling the completion of our long cherished dream

As per plan for the second phase, a Lord Shiva Temple was completed adjacent to the existing Kali Temple. The Shiva-lingam was installed and the temple was thrown open to public on the 27thof December, 1990

A grand and magnificent Laksmi–Narayan Temple was built adjacent to the existing Kali Temple. The kind and generous support from Late S.L. Shakdher, Ex-Chief Election Commissioner helped realize this dream. The temple was thrown open to the devotees on the 28th of April, 1993, and the temple, in its entirety as envisaged, was complete

Matri Mandir started a quarterly Bengali Magazine, ‘Matri Mandir Sambad’ in 2001. The publication chronicles the birth and steady growth of Matri Mandir along with a wide collection of contributions from local as well as writers of repute from far off places. It has become a very popular publication over the years

Scholarship programme for the meritorious and in need students was launched in 2001. Inspired by the gracious gesture of Late Salil Ghosh and Smt. Sukla Ghosh, a Scholarship Fund in memory of their beloved son Late Sudipto Ghosh was founded. At present, Sudipto Ghosh Memorial Scholarships are being disbursed to about 50 School Students of Delhi every year.
